Crepuscular Activity of Gypsy Moth 1 Adults 2

Abstract
Crepuscular activity of adult male and female gypsy moth ( Lymantria dispar L.) occurred regularly between 1900 and 2000 h, and between 0330 and 0445 h, respectively. Evening crepuscular flight accounted for 29.6% first flights for 3555 laboratory-reared males and 19.8% first flights for 2884 feral males. Crepuscular wing fanning and walking accounted for 92% of female motor activity and during the first 24 h after eclosion, females moved an average of 1.6 m Birds, voles, and mice were observed preying on moths. Crepuscular redistribution appears to be a mechanism for reducing predation and for helping males locate females.
