Abstract
Background: In recognition of the significant influence of resident teaching on student learning, a growing number of residency programs now offer residents training workshops in how to teach. Description: We reviewed the literature and determined 3 essential features of the resident teaching skills workshops that have been found to satisfy participants and lead to improved resident teaching performance. Evaluation: Successful workshops are time limited, they model the teaching skills under discussion, and they are integrated into a larger effort to improve resident teaching. Conclusions: We describe how these 3 features were implemented in a workshop we developed that is part of the Resident Teaching Skills Program for medical residents at the University of Virginia. Keywords
