Hypotensive Agents in Renal Biopsy

Abstract
ALTHOUGH COMPLICATIONS of kidney biopsy are rare,1hemorrhage following needle biopsy of the kidney may occur.2-5In our experience, this has been more common in hypertensive patients. A reduction in blood pressure prior to biopsy might be expected to reduce the incidence of complications with the procedure and to permit needle biopsy in those patients in whom it might otherwise be contraindicated because of hypertension. Methods Patients with blood pressures higher than 140/90 mm Hg at the time of renal biopsy were given either hexamethonium chloride or diazoxide immediately prior to biopsy and their blood pressure reduced to below 140/90 mm Hg. The complications in this group were then compared with a group of similar patients whose blood pressure remained above 140/90 mm Hg during renal needle biopsy. Hexamethonium chloride was used initially until the drug was no longer available. It was given slowly intravenously as a solution
