Abstract
Blood sugar determinations, by Folin''s modification of the Folin-Wu method, were carried out on 1 individual of each of 15 spp. of teleosts (representing 13 families) : 9 of them active, surface-feeding forms with high Hb content; the others sluggish bottom-feeders with low Hb. Maximum, average, and minimum values, expressed in mgm. of sugar % (the number of determinations being given in parenthesis) were: of the former group[long dash]Bull''s eye mackerel (Pneumatophorus colias) (10) 160,907, and 69.2; Butter-fish (Poronotus tricanthus) (8) 113.6, 79.4, and 57.5; Menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus) (30) 151.5, 75.2, and 52.9; Rudderfish (Palinurichthys perciformis) (7) 83.3, 67.7, and 54.9; Common mackerel (Scomber scombrus) (9) 76.6, 63.5, and 48.5; Eel (Anguilla rostrata) (4) 67.6, 59.0, and 40.6; Bonito (Sarda sarda) (3) 62.7, 55.1, and 48.5; Scup (Stenotomus chrysops) (46) 81.4, 52.6, and 35.3; and Silver hake (Merluccius bilinearis) (9) 85.4, 482, and 25.3; of the second group [long dash]Sea robin (Prionotus carolinus) (9) 60.9, 37.4 and 20.8; Sand dab (Lophopsetta maculata) (4) 42.5,31.0, and 24.6; Cunner (Tautogolabrus adspersus (4) 35.1, 25.2, and 13.4; Puffer (Spheroides maculatus) (15) 41.3, 23.1, and 4.5; Toadfish (Opsanus tau) (6) 22.3, 15.4, and 10.2; Goosefish (Lophius pisca-torius) (11) 10.3, 5.6 and 0.0. After administration of insulin (5-10 units in scup; 5 units in others) to 4 of the active spp., shock appeared: in Menhaden, 1 1/2-3 hrs. afterwards, in Common mackerel, 1-4 hrs., in Bull''s eye mackerel, 3-6 hrs., and in Scup, 10-23 hrs.; and blood sugar values were (in mgm. per 100 cc. blood) : Menhaden, 8.6-20.2; Common mackerel, 9.4-31.2; Bull''s eye mackerel, 9.4-11.1; and Scup, 0.0-15.3; administration of 5.15 units to 3 of the sluggish'' group led to no shock, and blood sugar values became: Sea robin, 8.8-32.5; Puffer, 0.0-13.5; and Toadfish, 1.5-22,9. Lowering of the blood sugar level after insulin occurred more rapidly in the active than in the sluggish spp.
