Abstract
It is shown that in plasmas described by model velocity distributions of the ``ring'' or the loss‐cone type, linearly polarized electromagnetic waves propagating across the magnetic field can be unstable around harmonics of the cyclotron frequencies. For suitable combinations of plasma and magnetic field parameters, the maximum growth rates of these electro‐magnetic cyclotron instabilities are proportional to the plasma frequency and the average of the square of the parallel velocities. Keywords
