Glass-glass transition in dense short-range attractive colloidal systems
Abstract
We study -- using molecular dynamics simulations -- the temperature dependence of the dynamics in a dense short-range attractive colloidal glass to find evidence of the kinetic glass-glass transition predicted by Mode Coupling Theory. The two distinct glass states are respectively stabilized by excluded volume and by the short-range attractive interactions. We compare the predictions of the theory with the calculated density autocorrelation functions. We discover that activated bond-breaking processes weaken the stability of the attractive glass which slowly converts into the hard-sphere one, preempting the glass-glass transition. Keywords
