Abstract
Lorazepam was compared to diazepam and placebo under double-blind conditions in an ambulatory and hospitalized patient population suffering from anxiety symptoms. Lorazepam was significantly superior to placebo and measurably superior to diazepam in anxiolytic effect; diazepam was also significantly superior to placebo but to a lesser degree. Although lorazepam was more potent on a weight for weight basis than diazepam, fewer ataxic effects attended its use.
