Abstract
Brain A concentration is significantly higher in patients dying with dialysis encephalopathy than in uremic patients without this syndrome, and it has previously been reported only in hemodialysed patients. A case of high brain Al concentration in a uraemic boy showing symptoms of severe encephalopathy is reported. He was never dialyzed, but only treated with aluminium hydroxide orally. Corresponding symptoms have been reported in nondialysed uremic children, but brain Al concentrations were not reported. High levels of parathormone may play a role in the resorption and distribution of Al. Al preparations should be avoided in children with renal failure.
