Abstract
Family therapy has long been neglected as a form of intervention for suicidal people, despite the importance of family interaction patterns to the development and course of suicide death and suicide. behavior We describe a cognitive behvioral approach to family therapy for suicidal people. The relationship between family interactions and suicide is briefly reviewed, followed by a description of the cognitive-behavioral model that highlights strategies that may be used to treat suicidal family members in general. We then consider interventions with particular applicability to adolescents and parents. Interventions are illustrated with clinical examples. It is concluded that the family exerts a powerful influence on its members' emotional and social adjustment and that these influences are best addressed within the context of family therapy.
