Abstract
Patients (30) with types II and IV hyperlipidemia were studied by a double blind cross over technique. Gemfibrozil at dosages of 1200 mg and 1600 mg a day was compared to 2000 mg daily of clofibrate. The effect of each drug regimen is described for the entire study population and for those who were responders. [Atherosclerosis is a complex disease process in which the role of serum lipids was debated. A direct relationship between serum lipid levels and the progression of coronary atherosclerosis as measured by repetitive coronary arteriography was reported. Successfully treated type II hyperlipidemic subjects do not show progression of their disease after 5 yr of follow-up. Regression of human femoral atherosclerotic lesions was demonstrated after lipid and other risk-reducing treatment.].
