Abstract
Polyphagus starrii (Chytridiales, Phycomycetes) is described from Nonamesset Island, Massachusetts. The organism was maintained on algal cultures and differs from previously described spp. in the ornamentation of the resting spore, the peculiar mode of attack on the host, and its host range. The rhizoids of young sporelings adhere to the flagella of motile hosts (members of the Volvocales) as well as infecting quiescent cells. The influence of the host on parasite morphology is discussed in relation to its taxonomic importance. Data on the host ranges of Polyphagus euglenae and P. laevis are included.
