Effects of memory load on reaction time.

Abstract
Gave 7 female undergraduates a memory search task. In 1 condition (no-cue), each element of the memory set had an equal probability of matching the test stimulus on positive trials. In the other 2 conditions (auditory cue and visual cue), S was told prior to the test which element of the memory set (the "high-probability" item) would be tested. For the no-cue condition, functions relating reaction time (RT) to memory-set size were linear and increasing with a slope of approximately 38 msec. For the auditory-cue and visual-cue conditions, RT functions were essentially flat, indicating that S compared the test stimulus with only the high-probability item and that memory load did not influence RT.
