New Distributional Records of Ticks Associated with Cliff Swallows, Petrochelidon spp., in the United States

Abstract
In the United States, cliff swallows appear to be the principal hosts of Ixooes baergi, I. howelli and Argas cooleyi. The distribution of these species is reviewed and first records are given of I. baergi for Illinois and Colorado, I. howelli for Colorado, and A. cooleyi for Wyoming. In addition, the nests and nesting sites of some swallow colonies in Texas, California, Wyoming and Montana were found to harbor Ornithodoros ticks provisionally determined as O. concanensis, a species which is thought to parasitze bats primarily. Bats were associated with some of the nesting sites where Ornithodoros were found. Identification of these ticks as concanensis must remain provisional until larvae are available for comparison with authentic larvae of concanensis and of aquilae, a morphologically similar species associated with raptorial birds.
