Abstract
Over a period of 5 years, 11 [degree]/b (1104) of 9980 gynecological patients examined complained of pruritus vulvae. In 952 patients (86 %), the pruritus was due to vaginal pathology and in 152 patients (14 %) was of extravaginal origin. Vulvo-vaginal and peri-vulval moniliasis occurred in 503 patients and only peri-vulval moniliasis in 29 patients, totalling 532 patients (48%) Trichomonas vaginalis was found in 414 patients (38 %). All other etiological factors were responsible for 14 % of pruritus vulvae. Tables showing the causes of pruritus vulvae as found in this study are presented. The recent increase of monilial genital infection, the possibility of enterobiasis as a cause of pruritus vulvae, and the low incidence of atrophic vulval conditions are discussed. Keywords
