Selenium and Torula Yeast in Production of Exudative Diathesis in Chicks.

Abstract
Vitamin E, dried brewers yeast and 0.05 ppm Se were equally effective in promoting growth, preventing exudative diathesis and maintaining normal serum protein, albu -min/globulin ratio and blood hemoglobin in chicks fed vitamin E -free soybean protein diet. Deficiency symptoms appeared in 30 days, and included mild edema and subcutaneous hemorrhage. Addition of 0.7% Na, 0.5 ppm As, or 1% K plus 0.07% mg to the diet did not reduce time to appearance of symptoms. Addition of 20% or 30% Torula yeast to the diet resulted in exudative diathesis in 18 and 17 days, respectively.
