Abstract
The proper treatment of pancreatitis depends upon accurate diagnosis. Acute pancreatitis is almost always a medical problem. Therapy aims to control pain, relieve shock, inhibit pancreatic secretory activity, prevent infection, and replace body fluids and electrolytes. Surgical intervention is reserved for such complications as pseudocyst and abscess formation and between attacks of acute pancreatitis. Recurrent severe abdominal pain and signs of pancreatic insufficiency are the major problems in chronic pancreatitis. No medical or surgical program is entirely satisfactory for the control of pain in chronic relapsing pancreatitis. Keywords
