The Influence of Noise on Stutterers' Different Disfluency Types

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of noise on the types of disfluencies of stutterers. Seventeen adult stutterers read prose aloud in the presence of a white noise (95 dB SPL). The frequency of types of disfluencies was determined and compared to the frequency of types of disfluencies obtained in a control condition. The presence of noise significantly reduced the total number of instances of disfluency behaviors. It significantly influenced only those disfluency types (part-word repetitions) that had a high frequency of occurrence during control. The findings indicate that the effect of noise on disfluency appears only for disfluency types that occur with a relatively high frequency in the control condition.
