Abstract
An improved DPCM (differential pulse code modulation) coding method for television applications is introduced. The method utilizes adaptive quantization and nonlinear, median type predictors. Consequently, it is called median adaptive DPCM (MADPCM). Simulation results indicate that good picture quality can be achieved with a compression ratio of 2.7:1 (3 bits/pixel). Using a three-dimensional spatiotemporal median-type predictor, even the compression ratio 4:1 (2 bits/pixel) gives good resultsKeywords
