Abstract
Pulmonary embolism is a problem of mounting importance which deserves to be investigated from a variety of approaches.13 FIVE YEARS ago pulmonary embolism was the sole cause of 47,000 deaths in this country.14 Subsequently, a steep rise in recorded cases has been noted. Typically, one report shows a five-fold increase in the number of patients suffering from pulmonary embolism in a ten-year period.13 This fact led the authors, Morrell et al, to pose the unanswered epidemiological question: in view of the evidence for massive increase in the number of cases of pulmonary embolism, is there the possibility that this represents merely one facet of an epidemic of thrombotic disease affecting Western Society? Attempts to answer the related and equally important question of proper prevention of this condition have taken a variety of forms. Medical therapy with heparin and even prothrombin depressants has its adherents.1,9 Recently, easyKeywords
