Abstract
A 10-gallon aquarium was selected as a possible site for spawning of S. fontinalis. A wild, sexually ripe pair was placed in each of 2 10-gallon aquaria which were prepared by covering the bottom with a layer of sand and gravel 2 to 3 in. deep. In 1 aquarium water entered from above the surface of the water and in the other below the surface of the gravel, simulating a spring. Digging took place soon after a pair was placed in each aquarium. Both pairs spawned and a high percentage (98.4 and 97.0) of viable eggs was deposited in the gravel.
