Inanition syndrome in infants with anterior hypothalamic neoplasms

Abstract
Four patients with progressive malnutrition and marasmus are described. Case histories all indicate the onset, in the early months of life, of an intractable progression of symptoms and signs consisting of failure to thrive, profound wasting, maintenance of relatively good strength and alertness, and a variable affective state ranging from euphoria to emotional lability to irritability. While there may be a common involvement of lateral nuclei of the hypothala-mus, as manifested by the invariable cachexia, specific conclusions respecting more precise involvement of this area are not possible at this time on the basis of material available.
