Abstract
We show how the usual phenomenological description of the decays of the and mesons can be derived in a unified manner beginning from a description of the and states as overlapping resonances in a scattering matrix. The unitarity relations for overlapping resonances in a -invariant (but not - or -invariant) theory play a crucial role in the discussion, and are treated in detail.
