Combination of 2,4-D with Fortified Oil-Emulsion Contact Herbicides

Abstract
With crop plants and weeds used as indicator plants, tests were made on the herbicidal properties of 2, 4-D, a fortified oil-emulsion contact spray, and combinations of the two. Whereas it is not considered good practice to use a general contact spray in combination with 2, 4-D, under the special conditions that exist in sugar cane and corn in Puerto Rico, this combination provided complete control of mixed-weed populations that did not respond so well to either ingredient used separately. The success of the combination spray depends on the fact that when the concentration of the fortified oil emulsion spray is kept so low that young cane and corn plants are not injured, several weeds including dayflower, bindweed, and nutgrass are not controlled. These spp. are all susceptible to 2, 4-D; when the latter is included in the spray the combined action of the 2 types of herbicides kills all the weeds, including young grasses and the 3 above-named spp.
