FACTORS INFLUENCING REDUCTION TIME OF BLOOD IN THE CAPILLARIES OF THE SKIN

Abstract
Reduction time of cutaneous blood is a function of many-physiologic variables, particularly those which influence the O content and flow of blood and the rate of utilization of O2 from the blood. The linear correlation coefficients between reduction time and some of the variables studied are: alveolar O2 tension, +0.87; systolic pressure, +0.37; dia-stolic pressure,+0.48; B. M. R., [long dash]0.60. Local histamine injns., and the reflex effects of heat and cold cause pronounced changes in reduction time. Nervous disturbances are found to have a profound effect. It was shown that stimulation in the region of the cervical sympathetic ganglion produces a marked decrease in reduction time, both immediate and prolonged. Breath-holding causes changes in reduction time that deserve special attention. If occlusion is made within a few secs. after the initiation of breath-holding, a resulting decrease in reduction time is explained on the basis of neurogenic peripheral vascular changes. A period of breath-holding maintained to a point of discomfort produces in normal subjects a decrease in reduction time which is believed to be a result of possible alterations in many of the above-mentioned factors.
