Abstract
The properties of permanent, laser-induced gratings were studied in -doped glasses. These gratings are associated with a structural modification of the glass host in the local environment of the ions, and we have investigated the effects produced by altering the concentration and by changing the composition of the glass host. A two-level-system model is developed to explain the results.
