The inheritance of mitochondrial DNA in Douglas-fir (Pseudotsugamenziesii)

Abstract
Restriction fragment length polymorphisms were used to determine the mode of inheritance of mitochondrial DNA in Douglas-fir (Pseudotsugamenziesii (Mirb.) Franco). Total DNA of foliage from both of the parents and from progeny of a single Douglas-fir cross was digested with restriction enzymes and hybridized to a Zeamays L. mitochondrial DNA radiolabeled probe. Mitochondrial DNA was maternally inherited in this cross. Previous research showed paternal inheritance of chloroplast DNA in Douglas-fir, thus it appears that each of the three genomes of Douglas-fir is inherited differently.
