Abstract
A preparation using the same cat''s esophagus for the control and test sgements was devised to assess the effect of reserpine on tissue resistance. Postoperative gastric juice from the same patient was perfused proximally and distally by alternately clamping limbs of a T-tube inserted in the cat''s mid-esophagus. The control side was perfused for 2 hours, reserpine .25 mg was given intravenously, allowed to act for 2 hours, then the test segment perfused for 2 hours. Ten of 12 specimens or 83.3% showed greater than 2+ digestion of the reserpine treated segment over the control. Five of 7 specimens of a 2d group of animals using separate cat''s esophagi as control and test preparations showed a greater than 2+ digestion in the reserpine treated cat. The intravenous administration of reserpine significantly increased susceptibility of the cat''s esophagus to perfusion of human gastric juice. Keywords
