Intra-Abdominal Injury from Safety Belt in Auto Accident

Abstract
The epidemic number of automobile crash injuries and deaths, despite great efforts to prevent accidents, has stimulated supplementary methods to reduce injuries under crash conditions. The simplest form of crashproofing is the lap or safety belt. We are reporting a case of intra-abdominal injury caused apparently by the snubbing action of a safety belt worn during a forward type of two vehicle collision. Report of Case In January, 1956, a 210 lb. 34-year-old trooper, wearing his safety belt, collided with a truck which had turned suddenly into his own lane of travel. Approximate speeds of the vehicles were 10-15 mph for the truck and 40-50 mph for the automobile (1955 Ford). Damage to the car was about $300, but it was unknown in regard to the truck (latter driver not hurt).
