The Coombs' Test and the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome

Abstract
To the editor: The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome is characterized by marked suppression of cell-mediated immunity and is believed to involve a defect in immunoregulation (1). Morris and colleagues (2) have reported autoimmune thrombocytopenia in male homosexuals without opportunistic infections or Kaposi's sarcoma. Zauber and Park (3) have reported autoimmune hemolytic anemia and neutropenia in a male homosexual. Therefore, we examined the results of Coombs' test in 10 male homosexuals with the syndrome (4 with Kaposi's sarcoma, 3 with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, 2 with toxoplasma brain abscess, and 1 with candida brain abscess) and 13 patients with the lymphadenopathy-fever syndrome (acquired-immuno-deficiency-syndrome-related
