The glomerulus is the microscopic filtration unit of the kidney. In a normally functioning glomerulus, proteins do not pass into the urine to any appreciable degree. If, however, the glomeruli are damaged then protein will leak into the urine, causing proteinuria - a sensitive marker of underlying renal disease.
