MULTIPLE-BALLOON-KYMOGRAPH RECORDING OF INTESTINAL MOTILITY IN MAN WITH OBSERVATIONS ON THE CORRELATION OF THE TRACING PATTERNS WITH BARIUM MOVEMENTS 1

Abstract
The authors have described 2 methods of assessing 4 balloon tracing records of the motility of the upper small intestine in man. One method is by visual inspection of the changes in frequency and duration of contractions. Changes of other than slight degree detd. by this subjective method agreed favorably with the other method, polar planimeter measurements of contractions. Correlation of the tracing pattern with Ba movements indicated, as previously suggested by others, that the rapid, low amplitude waves represented non-propulsive contractions while propulsive movements were associated with the slower, higher sustained contractions.
