Abstract
In the following paper a method is described for calculating the characteristic frequencies of a suspended inextensible chain vibrating with small amplitude in the plane of the catenary forming the equilibrium configuration. An asymptotic solution of the linearized equations of motion is obtained such that the accuracy of the results increases as the mode number increases and/or, as the catenary becomes flatter. Keywords
