Abstract
The epithelium lining the villus of the small intestine is considered as a compartment in the replacement kinetics of the intestinal epithelium. The three interrelated properties of the compartment –size, flux and transit time – are examined, and numerical estimates of their size in rat and mouse are given. Attention is paid to sources of error which may affect the precision of such estimates.
