Abstract
A method for classifying ranked observations into rank- specific categories is presented. This method is independent of any particular bibliometric law, but it has interesting proper ties for citation rates having a Paretian (otherwise known as Lotka) distnbution. The method is applied to assess the emi nence of scientific journals.Keywords
