Abstract
Although imported fire ants Solenopsis saevissima var. richteri have survived near zero weather in the east-central part of Mississippi, the effect of extreme cold on this species is not well known. During the early winter of 1958 many ants in soft, winter built mounds were killed when the mounds froze and were then collapsed by cold rain followed by a hard prolonged freeze.
