Abstract
Combined use of intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation (IABCP) and coronary revascularization was utilized in 28 patients with acute and chronic left ventricular power failure (LVPF) and ischemic dysrhythmias in a series of 386 consecutive coronary revascularization operations. Four patients could not be weaned off cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), 4 came off CPB but died on IABCP post-operatively, and 3 additional patients died in the hospital for an operative mortality of 39%. Seventeen patients (61%), however, were discharged from the hospital and 13 (46%) are long-term survivors (2.5–32 months; mean 12 months). IABCP was required from 6 h to 9 days (mean 4 days) in the survivor group. Our clinical experience suggests the usefulness of IABCP with coronary revascularization for acute or chronic LVPF preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively. Keywords
