Abstract
This study was conducted to estimate the hooking mortality of walleyes Stizostedion vitreum captured with an artificial lure or minnows and with barbed and barbless hooks. Captured fish were held in a live-box for 48 h to observe delayed mortality. Only 2 (0.8%) of 240 walleyes died. One fish died after being hooked in the gills by a barbless hook with an artificial lure. The other fish died after being hooked in the stomach by a single barbless hook baited with a minnow. Both fish died within 10 min after release into the holding structure. Even when live bait was used, most fish were hooked superficially in the mouth rather than in deep, vital areas.
