Abstract
Experiments were carried out with the co-operation of volunteer subjects in which air containing iodine vapour labelled with iodine-132 was drawn in through the nose and out through the mouth to measure the penetration of iodine vapour passing through this part of the respiratory system. As expected on theoretical grounds, appreciable penetration was detected which increased with the flow-rate. At a flow-rate of 40 l/min the penetration is approximately 30 per cent. Experiments with stable iodine confirmed these results. After some of the experiments, measurements of the rate of clearance of the deposited iodine from the nose showed that in the naso-pharyngeal region the half-time of clearance is about 30 min. Studies were also made of the rate of transfer to the blood and of the excretion in urine to give information on the metabolism of the radio-iodine during the first 2–3 hr after administration.
