Abstract
A microscopic model of mixed crystals with orientational disorder and translation-rotation coupling is proposed. The substitutional halogens generate random strain fields which couple to the orientational modes. At large fields, the ferroelastic phase transition is suppressed. The anomalous behavior of acoustic phonons is studied. The central peak is obtained as a static phenomenon. Qualitative agreement with a number of experimental results is obtained. Keywords
