CAROTID BODY TUMORS

Abstract
While carotid body tumors are rare, they must be considered in the differential diagnosis of any neck mass. The angiographic picture is typical and should allow the radiologist to make a preoperative diagnosis, thus saving the patient from the hazards of biopsy. The radiologist can be of considerable help in planning the management of these lesions by noting the size and position of the tumor, the patency and relationship of the carotid vessels and the status of the cerebral collateral circulation. A typical case is presented along with an extremely rare case showing malignancy and metastatic spread.
