Abstract
Angle-resolved uv photoemission spectra for photon energies 12–40 eV from a clean, well-ordered γ-Ce(001) single-crystal surface are reported and discussed in terms of a self-consistent local-density band-structure calculation. Generally good agreement is found between experimental peak positions of dispersing features and calculated direct-transition energies. The polarization dependence of the spectra at normal emission allows us to discriminate between bandlike emission subject to k-dependent selection rules and atomic features which are insensitive against the polarization direction. Atomiclike 4f emission is observed at 0.2–0.3 eV and 2.1–2.3 eV below , depending on the photon energy; no measurable dispersion is found with polar emission angle. Interestingly, 4f emission can still be recognized for hν<20 eV.
