HISTOCHEMICAL LOCALIZATION OF ACID PHOSPHATASE IN THE HUMAN CEREBELLAR CORTEX

Abstract
1) The distribution of acid phosphatase in the human cerebellar cortex is described, based on studies of autopsy material using the technique of Gomori and that of Burstone. 2) Earlier investigations have predominantly shown a false nuclear localization not seen in our material. The bulk of acid phosphatase in the cerebellar cortex is situated in the cytoplasm of Bergmann cells. Some activity is also found in the cytoplasm of Purkinje cells, in Golgi cells, and with perivascular localization. Very fine bodies showing acid phosphatase activity can be demonstrated with perinuclear localization in the granule cells. In the new-born, acid phosphatase is found almost selectively in the cytoplasm of the Purkinje cells. 3) The distribution of acid phosphatase in the cerebellar cortex shows great similarity to the occurrence of PAS-positive, autofluorescent lipopigment in this region.
