Abstract
Yuse and Sano [Nature (London) 362, 329 (1993); 362, 295 (1993)] have shown that a crack traveling in a thin glass plate under thermal stresses undergoes numerous instabilities. The primary instability is calculated using a theory of Cotterell and Rice [Int. J. Fracture 16, 155 (1980)] and is shown to reflect the velocity-dependent fracture energy of glass. Keywords
