Abstract
The orientation of glass and carbon fibers in polymer composites has been investigated using both physical and optical sectioning. We have successfully automated the analysis of large area sections containing thousands of fibers where there is good contrast between fibers and polymer matrix. Recently, we have investigated the application of the laser scanning confocal microscope for the determination of 3-D orientations of glass fibers in polyoxymethylene. Initial data are presented together with a discussion on the preprocessing of the subsurface image fields necessary for automating the confocal process. Keywords
