Spouses of Discharged Psychiatric Patients: Factors Associated with Their Experience of Burden

Abstract
In this article we examine variations in the experience of burden among a sample of men and women who are married to formerly hospitalized psychiatric patients. We investigate the extent to which psychiatric characteristics of the patient and aspects of family structure affect the perception of burden and how other factors such as stressful life events and psychosocial resources influence this process. We also examine differences between husbands and wives in their perception of burden related to living with a spouse who has had a history of psychiatric illness. The findings of this study are discussed in the context of the stress process model and their relevance for conceptions of role strains.
