Abstract
The standard mapping results from a study of nonlinear forced oscillations of a gas in a closed tube. On interpreting stochastic transition as the breaking of all waves during a round trip in the tube, an estimate for the critical value of the relevant parameter is simply derived. The estimate agrees very well with the result of a more elaborate analysis of Greene. Keywords
