A Consolidated Model of Long-Term Care: Service Utilization and Cost Impacts

Abstract
Service utilization and cost impacts of a consolidated model of long-term care for functionally impaired elderly were assessed using a quasi-experimental research design. Compared to the traditional long-term care system, a consolidated model of long-term care reduces the number of days of hospital and nursing home care, redistributes health care dollars from expensive institutional care toward a broader range of less costly services provided in a community-based setting, and reduces the overall cost of long-term care.
