Abstract
MacLeod and Hayhoe derived an absorption spectrum for an anomalous visual photopigment common to protanomals (Pa) and deuteranomals (Da) consistent with the Schouten hypothesis. Pokorny, Smith and Katz showed that the Rayleigh equations for Pa and Da required 2 distinctly different anomalous pigments. Because both analyses are subject to systematic errors and uncertainties, these were examined here to determine whether or not the disagreement in results could be resolved. The Pokorny, Smith and Katz result is sensitive to the accuracy of Schmidt''s Rayleigh equations and the validity of their version of the pigment absorption template hypothesis. These assumptions were tested. The results remained in disagreement with those of MacLeod and Hayhoe. The single function derived from the Pa and Da color matching functions by use of the MacLeod and Hayhoe procedure is not the photopigment that mediates anomalous color vision. Keywords
