Flexible Implant Resection Arthroplasty

Abstract
The results of our research study since 1962 for the development of flexible implants for reconstructive surgery of the extremities is described. The ancient operation of resection of diseased joints is made more efficient and predictable by this method. The concepts for the proper use of silicone rubber implants must be understood if the surgeon is to use them properly. The surgical technique for implant arthroplasty of the metacarpophalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joints is described. The importance of a post-operative rehabilitation programme is emphasised. A statistical review of cases of metacarpophalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joint implant arthroplasty is presented. This survey demonstrates the effectiveness of this concept for the correction of deformity and the improvement of joint function.
