Abstract
A variational perturbation method is used to investigate the problem of incoherent two-soliton interaction, i.e. interaction through nonlinear intensity overlap only. This situation is found to lead to a mutual coupling between the solitons which is weaker than in the previously studied case of coherent interaction. It is also shown that bound soliton systems are characterized by a period of oscillation which increases with the initial soliton separation. This increase is faster than in the case of coherent soliton interaction.
